Get to know the Serra do Pilar Monastery
The Monastery of Serra do Pilar was founded in the sixteenth century by the order of Saint Augustine.
The church is circular in shape, as is the only cloister in the country.
During the nineteenth century it became a military fortress due to its strategic location over the city of Porto and Gaia.
After the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal, the monastery was integrated into the patrimony of the State, currently housing the artillery regiment, thus belonging to the Portuguese army.
The Serra do Pilar Monastery, despite being located in Gaia, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage classification in Porto in 1996.
