Get to know the D. Maria Pia Bridge

The D. Maria Pia Bridge made for the first time the railway connection between the banks, constituting a great development for the city of Porto and the entire north of the country.
It was inaugurated on November 4, 1877 by King Luís and Queen Maria, after whom it was named. The project was in charge of Gustave Eiffel, and was considered one of his great works.
In 1982 it was classified as a National Monument.
It has been deactivated since 1991 when the S. João bridge came into operation.
In September 2013 it was ranked by The Gardian newspaper as one of the 10 most beautiful bridges in the world.
